"You are both Stupid"

I was listening to the Michael Medved Show and he, as talk radio hosts often do, filled me with a desire to stab my eardrums with a sharp object

the subject was on NC-17 rated/Unrated versions of films Vs the clear play technology.

Now let me be 100% clear I think Clearplay and like technologies is a terrific idea. Ra-Ra~! go team. I also like the fact i can now see Unrated/NC-17 rated versions of films if i choose to.

Now, While i think the power lobbying move by the studios is another step of the republican dominated congress crushing capitalism in this country, I think Michael was an utter tool in suggesting that the studios release PG or PG_13 rated versions of R movies and here is why.

Movies like "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle", "Team America-World Police", and "The Girl Next Door" are some of the films i personally own that are now Unrated. the latter to have more... but not allot more sexual content. the former has allot of drug refrences. I plan to buy the unrated version of the Kill Bill Saga as well with lots of violence. Why you may ask?

Because the reasonable use of Sex, Drugs, and violence to advance a story can make a film better. and in the case of the above films their fanbase largely would liked to have seen more sex, drugs and violence. So... to the movie studio this is a customer base that demands service which they can easily provide. This sells more DVD's and makes all manner of people rich.

Now.... I am sure their may be Christian family audiences who would want to see a Pg version of a story about a Adult Film star and her boyfriend who have to make a sex-ed video to prevent him from going to jail for fraud..... but i just have never met them. Or a Religous Conservative family who wants to see a movie about two stoners on their drugged out adventures with all the drug refrences removed..... you get the Idea. Their isn't a demand for these movies sanatized of their fundemental plot elements.

Now... some movies of a less extreme nature, this may be a whole other story. I can't think of any R rated films off the top of my head that could be sanitized and still be a entertaining film. they may exist but their isn't a sufficent audience to serve by making a whole DVD devoted to it. this is why technology like Clearplay is good... this way we don't have to make DVD's for this small market segment. they can censor themselves.

Its about Choice. I want to see More Puppet sex, and I want people to have the right in their homes to edit the puppet sex out of the same movie if they really want to.
