Nor do I play a religous conservative on TV. But I am also against fetal stem cell research. I find myself in the company of folks like Matt and Trey on this one, but I think the whole debate is really irrational.

Science these days isn't like some elect priesthood free from the sins of us mortal men. I also as a student of history am pretty sure it wasn't ever like that. Science is all about "How do I get money to pay for my research."

Think about your Bill and Hillary Clinton's. They are pretty robust in federal positions supporting abortion rights but they try to twist/contort/and spin how they really are pro-life. To Democrats who try to talk Pro-Life but vote Pro-Choice this is perfect. So that right their gets you 'round half the votes in the legislature of your choice.

People who feel guilty about abortions being the Law and knowing they can't do anything to stop them ( most of your republicans these days) can vote for this and feel good that something they view as murder of thousands of children on a daily basis can have some purpose.

Inject in some victims and you got yourself a bi-partisan sales pitch. But no where in this sales pitch is the science. No where when we heard Nancy Reagan speaking on the subject did we hear Nancy tell us the science was real and could have helped her husband live on years longer.Because it is about the politics not the Science.

To many hurdles exist for Fetal Stem Cell research before a workable product exists. Which is why no major corperations are investing in it as a way to find new therapies... they know this isn't a good bang for the buck. But politicians never spend your money to get a good return, they spend your money for their whims.

By making this all about Abortion or "The Culture of life" you are playing into the same game of P.T Barnum, the same sideshow hucksterism which gives bogus science money from the federal government and has real scientists skrimping and prostituting to get other research done.

If you try to make this all about Abortion, frankly you've already lost. You've been bamboozled. If you want to make this out about how silly the christian right is you are biased and hoodwinked by your own preconceptions.

It is a waste of federal money... lets put the money into something that has a better shot at improving the lives of every man woman and child in this country....and as that happens new jobs will be created because these products will hit the market faster and then we'll have the money to play with riskier science
